Based on: each company's official pricing, model, and privacy pages, checked in October 2026. Dollar prices are from the US pages. Won (KRW) prices are from the Korean pages.
There are so many AI services that it is hard to know where to start. But only a few things matter when you choose: how much you can do for free, whether the service is good at the job you have in mind, and where the text you type is stored and whether it is used for training.
Names, prices, and features change every few months, so check the official page once more before you pay. This guide does not rank anything. It only copies what each company says on its official pages, and where an official page gives no value, the guide says so. It explains how 12 US and Chinese AI services differ, centered on Claude, ChatGPT, and Gemini, and how to choose between them.
1. Four words to know first
| Word | Meaning | Comparison |
|---|---|---|
| Model | The brain that reads text and writes answers. Names like GPT, Claude, and Gemini followed by a number | A car's engine |
| Service (app) | A model released with features such as a chat window, file uploads, and search | A car with the engine built in |
| API | A doorway that lets a program you made call the model. You pay for what you use | Buying just the engine and fitting it into your own car |
| Open weights | A trained model file that anyone may download | Buying a meal kit and cooking it at home instead of eating at the restaurant |
Figure 1. Three ways to use one model. The price and where your text goes depend on which way you use it (diagram, labels in Korean)
Even at the same company, app pricing and API pricing are separate. The app is a subscription with a fixed monthly fee. The API is counted in tokens. A token is the unit AI uses to count text, a piece slightly smaller than a word. "Dollars per 1 million tokens" on an API price list is the cost of sending or receiving that much text.
You will also often see the term context window. It is how much text a model can lay out and look at at once. It is like a desk: the bigger the desk, the more papers you can spread out on it. To paste in a whole long document and ask about it, this value needs to be large.
2. The 12 services at a glance
| Country | Service | Made by | Flagship models listed on the official page | Where individuals use it |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| US | Claude | Anthropic | Fable 5.1, Opus 5.5, Sonnet 5.5, Haiku 5.5 | claude.ai, desktop and mobile apps |
| US | ChatGPT | OpenAI | GPT-6 Astra, GPT-6.1 Sol, GPT-6 Luna | chatgpt.com, apps |
| US | Gemini | Gemini 3.8 Flash, 3.1 Pro, 3.5 Flash-Lite | gemini.google.com, apps | |
| US | Grok | SpaceXAI (x.ai) | Grok 4.7 | grok.com, apps, X |
| US | Meta AI | Meta | Muse Spark 1.3 | meta.ai |
| US | Copilot | Microsoft | — | copilot.microsoft.com, Windows, Microsoft 365 apps |
| China | DeepSeek | DeepSeek (Hangzhou DeepSeek Artificial Intelligence) | DeepSeek-V4.1-Flash, V4-Pro | deepseek.com, apps |
| China | Qwen | Alibaba | qwen3.8-max, qwen3.7-plus, qwen3.8-flash | qwen.ai |
| China | Kimi | Moonshot AI | kimi-k3, kimi-k2.7-code | kimi.com |
| China | Z.ai (GLM) | Z.ai (Zhipu AI) | GLM-5.3, GLM-5.3-Flash | chat.z.ai |
| China | ERNIE | Baidu | ERNIE 5.1 | ernie.baidu.com |
| China | Doubao | ByteDance | Seed 2.1 | doubao.com |
- Copilot picks among several models depending on the kind of task, so its flagship model cell is empty.
- Seed 2.1 in the Doubao row is the flagship model announced by ByteDance Seed.
- Each service is covered to a different extent. For Meta AI, only the model and open weights are covered. For ERNIE and Doubao, pricing is not covered. This is because only values written on official pages were copied.
- Perplexity, a search-style service, is left out because its official pricing page and policy could not be checked.
3. Free and paid pricing
3-1. Personal plans
Below are the five services whose official pricing pages list values.
| Service | Free | Paid (per month) |
|---|---|---|
| Claude | Chat, web search, file creation, code execution | Pro $20 ($17 a month when billed yearly), Max from $100 |
| ChatGPT | GPT-6 text chat; image creation, voice, and deep research are limited | Go $8, Plus $20, Pro from $100 (three tiers: $100, $200, $500) |
| Gemini | 3.5 Flash-Lite, image creation, Deep Research, 15 GB storage | Google AI Plus KRW 7,500, Ultra KRW 119,000 or KRW 300,000 |
| Grok | Real-time web and X search, voice | SuperGrok $30, SuperGrok Plus $100 |
| Copilot | Chat, search, image creation | Microsoft 365 Personal $9.99, Family $12.99, Premium $19.99 |
- Google AI Pro appears on the plans page with only its name and features, and no won price. Check the price on the checkout screen.
- Grok also has SuperGrok Lite, SuperGrok Heavy, and Business plans. These three appear on the pricing page table by name only, so check their prices on the sign-up screen.
- Copilot's paid features come with a Microsoft 365 subscription. You use Copilot inside Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. Storage is 1 TB for Personal and 2 TB for Family and Premium.
- Dollar prices are from the US pages. If you pay from Korea, the amount may differ because of taxes and exchange rates.
What to know when you start free: every free plan limits how many times you can use it, and answers slow down at busy times. Paying mostly buys you "more use, better models, faster." Try two or three services for free first, then pay for only the one you reach for most.
3-2. API pricing
This is the cost of calling a model from a program. Prices are per 1 million tokens, and the text you send (input) and the text you get back (output) are priced differently.
| Model | Input | Output | Context window |
|---|---|---|---|
| GPT-6 Astra | $10 | $50 | about 1.05 million tokens |
| GPT-6.1 Sol | $2 | $10 | about 1.05 million tokens |
| GPT-6 Luna | $0.1 | $0.5 | about 1.05 million tokens |
| Claude Opus 5.5 | $4 | $20 | 1 million tokens |
| Claude Sonnet 5.5 | $2 | $10 | 1 million tokens |
| Claude Haiku 5.5 | from $0.1 | from $0.5 | 1 million tokens |
| Gemini 3.1 Pro (preview) | $2 | $12 | about 1.05 million tokens |
| Gemini 3.8 Flash | $0.75 (until the end of 2026) | $3.75 (until the end of 2026) | about 1.05 million tokens |
| Grok 4.7 | $2 | $6 | 500,000 tokens |
| DeepSeek-V4-Pro | $1.32 | $3.96 | 1 million tokens |
| DeepSeek-V4.1-Flash | $0.3 | $1.2 | 1 million tokens |
| Kimi K3 | $3 | $15 | about 1.05 million tokens |
| GLM-5.3 | $1.4 | $4.4 | 1 million tokens |
- DeepSeek's values are peak-time prices. Off-peak, they are half.
- Gemini 3.1 Pro and Grok 4.7 cost more when one request sends more than 200,000 tokens.
- Some models can be called for free. Gemini 3.8 Flash has a free tier on the API, and Z.ai offers GLM-4.7-Flash, GLM-4.5-Flash, and GLM-4.6V-Flash for free. What you send on Gemini's free tier is used to improve products.
Figure 2. The values in the table above as bars, ordered from the most expensive input. Dark bars are input, light bars are output (diagram, labels in Korean)
Prices split by model tier more than by country. The lowest rows are GPT-6 Luna and Claude Haiku 5.5 ($0.1 input), and the highest is GPT-6 Astra ($10 input). Among models in the $1 to $4 input range, DeepSeek-V4-Pro ($1.32) and GLM-5.3 ($1.4) are on the low side. A cheaper model is not guaranteed to suit your work better, so send the same question to two models and compare the answers before you decide.
4. What each one is good at
Below is what each company itself highlights on its official pages. It is not a user review or a ranking. Benchmark scores change with how and when they are measured, so they are not included in this guide.
| Service | What the official page highlights | Things to watch |
|---|---|---|
| Claude | Long-running coding and document work. The coding tool Claude Code, creating documents and slides | The models read text and images and answer in text. The official model list has no model that creates images or video |
| ChatGPT | Image creation, voice chat, deep research, the coding tool Codex, and scheduled tasks, all in one app | On the free plan, one message can hold about 12 pages of text. The Go plan may show ads |
| Gemini | Working with Gmail and Docs, creating images (Nano Banana) and video (Veo 3.1), bundled storage | Features such as video creation are in higher plans. Some features are limited by country |
| Grok | Real-time search of the web and X, several agents splitting a problem, creating images and 15-second videos | 1080p video starts at SuperGrok Plus |
| Copilot | Use it right inside Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook | Even on the Family plan, AI features are only for the person who subscribed |
| DeepSeek | Low API prices, a 1-million-token context, understanding text and images | API prices at peak time are double the off-peak prices |
| Qwen | Image (Qwen-Image) and video (Wan) models offered through the API along with text models | The chat app and the API have separate privacy policies (section 5) |
| Kimi | Agents for coding and document work, slides and deep research, a coding-only model | To stop training use, you ask customer support (section 5) |
| Z.ai (GLM) | Free API models, image (GLM-Image) and video (CogVideoX-3) models | No separate switch for turning off training is described (section 5) |
| ERNIE | One model that handles text, images, video, and sound (from ERNIE 5.0), the image model ERNIE-Image | The app's pricing and privacy policy are not covered in this guide |
Storage locations for both the US and Chinese services are collected in the tables in section 5. Grouped again by type of work, it looks like this.
- Writing and long documents: models with a large context window have the edge. In the table in section 3-2, every model except Grok 4.7 (500,000 tokens) is around 1 million tokens. In the ChatGPT app, how much you can send depends on the plan. With the reasoning models, Plus takes about 320 pages and Pro about 680 pages.
- Coding: a coding tool is easier than pasting code into a chat window. A coding tool reads and edits the folders on your computer directly. Claude Code comes with Claude Pro and up, and Codex is included in a limited form even in ChatGPT's free plan. Google has a tool called Antigravity, SpaceXAI has Grok Build, and DeepSeek has Harness.
- Search: check whether answers come with source links. Grok searches the web and X in real time, and Claude, ChatGPT, Gemini, and Copilot also search the web.
- Images and video: ChatGPT (GPT-Image-2.5), Gemini (Nano Banana, Veo 3.1), and Grok (Imagine) create them inside the chat window. Claude only reads images.
5. Privacy: where your data is stored and whether it is used for training
Text you type into an AI chat window goes to that company's servers. It is a bit like mailing a postcard. Who receives it, how long they keep it, and what they use it for are written in the terms. There are two things to look at: whether your chats are used to train models and which country's servers store them.
Figure 3. The path text takes after you type it into a chat window, and three ways to cut that path (diagram, labels in Korean)
The two tables below copy the same five items from the privacy policy of each personal app. Where a policy does not cover an item, the cell has a dash (—).
5-1. US services
| Service | Operating company and storage location | Used for training? | How to turn it off | Handling of identifying information | Transfers abroad |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Claude | Anthropic PBC. Servers in the US | Chats and coding sessions are used if the model improvement setting is on. Incognito chats are excluded | Turn it off in account settings | Kept for up to 5 years in a de-identified form | Transferred to servers in the US or other countries |
| ChatGPT | OpenAI. — | May be used for personal accounts. Temporary Chat is excluded | Turn it off in the privacy portal or settings | Takes steps to reduce the amount of personal information in training data | — |
| Gemini | Google. Servers in many places around the world | Used if Keep Activity is on. Some chats are reviewed by people | Turn off Keep Activity. Even when off, chats are kept for 72 hours | Chats reviewed by people are separated from the account and kept for up to 3 years | May be processed on servers outside the country where you live |
| Grok | SpaceXAI LLC. — | May be used. Private Chat is excluded and deleted within 30 days | Choose in the app and web settings | May be used after pseudonymizing or removing identifying information | — |
| Copilot | Microsoft. Your region, the US, and other places where it has facilities | Questions, answers, and files in the Copilot app used with a personal account are not used to train foundation models | No separate training switch. Chat history can be deleted in settings | — | May be stored and processed in the US and other countries |
- Grok's privacy policy does not say which country stores the data. For ChatGPT's storage location, check the OpenAI privacy policy.
- The Copilot row is based on the new app released in August 2026. In the old app, chats may be used for training, and you turn that off in settings.
- Claude deletes chats you delete from its servers within 30 days, and Gemini's activity history is deleted automatically after 18 months by default.
- Meta AI and ERNIE are not in either table because their app privacy policies are not covered.
Business plans and APIs follow different rules. OpenAI's Team, Enterprise, and API, and Claude's Team plan, do not use what you send for training by default. If you handle company data, read the terms of the business plan, not the personal plan.
5-2. Chinese services
| Service | Operating company and storage location | Used for training? | How to turn it off | Handling of identifying information | Transfers abroad |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| DeepSeek | Hangzhou DeepSeek Artificial Intelligence. Servers in China | May be used for technical training and improvement | Turn off "Improve the model for everyone" in settings | Filters out sensitive personal information before training | When used from Korea, personal information is transferred to China |
| Kimi | Moonshot AI (北京月之暗面科技). Inside China | Inputs and outputs are used to improve the model | Ask customer support | Used after encryption and removal of identifying information | Not provided outside China without separate consent |
| Doubao | A ByteDance service. The operators named in the policy are 北京春田知韵科技 and its affiliates. Inside China | For personal use, inputs and answers are used for training | Turn off "Help improve the model" under the privacy item in settings | Used after encryption and removal of identifying information | Not sent outside China at present |
| Z.ai | JINGSHENG HENGXING TECHNOLOGY (a Singapore company). Mostly processed in Singapore | Training and improvement are among the processing purposes | No switch is described. Ask by email to object to processing | May be used after anonymization | May be transferred abroad to affiliates or third parties |
| Qwen | Alibaba. — | The API (Alibaba Cloud Model Studio) does not use customer data for training | — | — | — |
- The Qwen row describes the API policy. The chat app has its own policy, so read the app's policy when you sign up.
- DeepSeek has a separate privacy policy in Korean and cites articles of Korea's Personal Information Protection Act.
- Kimi's and Doubao's policies are documents in Chinese.
Here is what to keep in mind when reading the two tables.
- The law that applies depends on the storage location. If the servers are in China, Chinese laws and regulations apply to that data. If they are in the US, US law applies. This does not mean one side is better. It means you should know which country's rules your data falls under when you choose. For someone living in Korea, both US and Chinese servers are abroad.
- Even one company can differ by channel. Some, like Z.ai, have a Singapore company run the channel for users outside the country. Check the operating company name and the storage location sentence at the top of the policy.
- Turning it off may not be a switch. Kimi and Z.ai need a separate request instead of a settings switch.
- Check your company's or school's rules first. Some workplaces and schools block certain AI services. Check the internal rules before you put work data in.
5-3. Rules for any service
- Do not enter national ID numbers, passwords, card numbers, or the original text of contracts.
- On the day you sign up, find the training-use item in settings and set it the way you want.
- For something you want to ask only once and not keep, use a temporary or private chat.
- Do not upload files that contain other people's personal information.
6. Open-weight models
You can download an open-weight model and run it on your own computer. Your text is not sent over the internet, so the worries in section 5 shrink. In exchange, you need a powerful graphics card, and you have to install and maintain it yourself.
| Made by | Released models | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| OpenAI | gpt-oss-120b, gpt-oss-20b | Apache 2.0 license. A different model from the GPT-6 used in ChatGPT |
| Gemma 4 | A lightweight open model from the same research as Gemini. Text, sound, and image input | |
| Meta | Muse Glimmer, Llama 4 | Muse Glimmer is for agents that run on your own computer |
| DeepSeek | DeepSeek-V4.1-Flash, V4-Pro | Models with the same names as the API models are on Hugging Face |
| Alibaba | Qwen3.8-Flash-Next, Qwen-Image-2.1 | A text model and an image model |
| Moonshot AI | Kimi-K3, Kimi-K2.7-Code | |
| Z.ai | GLM-5.3, GLM-5.3-Flash | |
| Baidu | ERNIE 4.5 family, ERNIE-Image | Whether the latest ERNIE 5.1 is released could not be confirmed |
- Anthropic's official model documentation lists no downloadable Claude model. Claude is used only through the apps, the API, and the clouds of Amazon, Google, and Microsoft.
- Even when you can download a model, the license decides how you may use it. Licenses differ by model, so if you want to use one to make money, read the license on the model page. In this table, the license name was checked only for OpenAI's gpt-oss.
If you want to use a Chinese company's model but would rather not send your data to servers abroad, you can run an open-weight model on your own computer. In that case, your text does not go to that company's servers.
7. Four ways to use them
| Way | Who it suits | Examples |
|---|---|---|
| Web | First-time users. Nothing to install | claude.ai, chatgpt.com, gemini.google.com |
| App | People who ask by voice or by taking a photo | Phone apps, desktop apps |
| Coding tool | People who build programs or edit many files at once | Claude Code, Codex, Antigravity, Grok Build |
| API | People who want to put AI into their own programs | Get a key from each company's developer site |
The web is enough at first. When you feel "I repeat the same task on the web every day," that is the time to move to a coding tool or the API.
8. Korean language support
| Service | What the official materials confirm |
|---|---|
| Gemini | Korean is in the supported languages and South Korea is in the supported countries. The plans page also shows prices in won |
| Claude | In a table measured with older models, Korean scores were 93 to 97% of English |
| Grok | Supports more than 30 languages |
| DeepSeek | Provides a privacy policy in Korean |
Most current models can take questions and answer in Korean. How natural they sound differs by service and cannot be judged from official materials alone. Send the same request for the kind of writing you do most (work emails, reports, blog posts) to two or three services and compare. Also check whether the menus appear in Korean, whether you can pay in won, and whether there is customer support in Korean.
9. A table for choosing
| If you | Try first | Free plan and monthly price | Why |
|---|---|---|---|
| Are using AI for the first time | ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude | All three have a free plan | Sign up and use it on the web right away. Good for comparing the three with the same question |
| Use Gmail and Google Docs every day | Gemini | Free plan available. Google AI Plus KRW 7,500 | Works with Gmail and Docs, and storage comes with it |
| Work in Word, Excel, and PowerPoint | Copilot (Microsoft 365) | Free plan available. Inside the apps, from Personal at $9.99 | You call it right inside the programs you already use |
| Handle long reports or book-length text | Claude, or ChatGPT Plus and up | Claude has a free plan, Pro $20. ChatGPT Plus $20 | Can take a lot of text at once (Claude models 1 million tokens, ChatGPT Plus about 320 pages) |
| Want to hand off coding | Claude Code, Codex | Claude Code from Pro at $20. Codex is included in a limited form even on the free plan | The plan includes a tool that reads and edits folders directly |
| Want to make images and short videos | ChatGPT, Gemini, Grok | ChatGPT and Gemini can create images even on the free plan. Grok includes image and video creation in SuperGrok ($30) | Create and edit inside the chat window |
| Look for news as it happens | Grok, or any service with web search | Grok's free plan includes real-time search | Searches the web and X in real time. Always open the source links in the answer |
| Want to save on API costs | GPT-6 Luna, Claude Haiku 5.5, DeepSeek-V4.1-Flash, the free tiers of GLM and Gemini | $0.1 to $0.3 per 1 million input tokens. Free tiers cost 0 | The lowest-priced rows (section 3-2). For free tiers, first check how your data is used |
| Must not send data outside | Run an open-weight model on your own computer | The model is free. You need a graphics card | Your text does not go out over the internet |
| Handle company data | Each service's business plan | Claude Team from $20 per person, ChatGPT Business from $20 per person (both billed yearly) | Many do not use data for training by default. Company rules come first |
You do not have to pick one service and use it forever. Subscriptions can be canceled month to month, so you can try a different one each month.
10. Common mistakes and fixes
| Symptom | Cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Says "limit reached" even after upgrading to paid | Paid plans also have limits per few hours and per week | Check when the limit resets. If you hit it often, compare the next plan up |
| You subscribed to the app, but the API is billed separately | The app subscription and the API are different products | Create an API key only when a program calls it, and set a spending limit in advance |
| The answer sounds right but is wrong | AI can answer as if it knows things it does not | For numbers, dates, and legal articles, open the source link and check against the original |
| Forgets the beginning of a long document | The context window or the plan's input limit was exceeded | Split the document, or use a plan or model with a larger limit |
| A model name you saw online is not in the app | Model names change often, and each plan has different models | Check your plan's model list on the service's pricing page |
| You worry yesterday's chat was used for training | You did not look at the training setting when you signed up | Change the setting now. In most cases it applies to new chats after the change |
Summary in one line
Compare two or three services for free with the same question → check the training setting and the storage location → pay for only the one you reach for most → keep data that must not leave out of it, or use a model that runs on your own computer.
